In Offering (Sesaji), Rusli presents a ritual act as an expression of the relationship between humanity, nature, and the spiritual world within Javanese tradition. Rather than depicting a ceremony in literal detail, he reduces its forms to create an image that is poetic, contemplative, and evocative.

 

One of the pioneers of lyrical painting in Indonesia, Rusli believed that a work of art emerged through careful observation, reflection, and the distillation of experience. His delicate lines, open spaces, and vibrant colours are not intended to reproduce reality faithfully but to capture its essential meaning. Through Offering, a traditional ritual becomes more than a cultural practice- it becomes a meditation on faith, nature, and the human experience. The painting entered the Museum of Fine Arts collection through a donation by Adam Malik in 1976.
