Semar is the central guardian figure in Javanese wayang tradition, embodying wisdom, humility, and moral guidance. In this painting, Soedibio portrays Semar alongside the Punakawan- Petruk, Gareng, and Bagong- while placing the figure within the silhouette of a much larger Semar. This monumental presence reinforces Semar's role as a spiritual protector whose wisdom transcends the physical world.

 

During the 1970s, Soedibio developed a distinctive style of Kejawen Surrealism that combined quiet spirituality with richly decorative compositions. The canvas is filled with two-dimensional ornamentation and symbols drawn from Javanese cosmology, including the Tree of Life as an emblem of existence and harmony. Through this synthesis of Javanese philosophy and modern art, Soedibio presents Semar as an enduring symbol of inner wisdom and balance. The painting entered the Museum of Fine Arts collection through a donation by Adam Malik in 1976.
